Dental Implants Q & A

Why do People Get Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a good solution in a variety of situations where patients are seeking a long term tooth replacement. An implant can replace a missing tooth without impacting the teeth on either side of it. A dental implant stops jaw pain or bite problems brought on when the teeth shift into the vacant hole since it completely fills the area with a properly-sized tooth. An implant can even support other dental work, for example, dentures or bridges.

How Are Dental Implants Installed in the Mouth?

Because dental implants are a permanent tooth replacement, they have to be installed surgically. The dentist will open the gums surgically to create a space to hold the implant support network (the fixture) within the jaw. The fixture then has a connector called the abutment attached to the top of it. This abutment will have a protruding screw that the dentist will then attach the tooth replacement to.

How Long Does it Take to Get Dental Implants?

In many cases, a dental implant is a two-step process, so it may require two appointments spaced several months apart. Once the abutment has been placed, there is a healing period needed to allow the gums to get accustomed to the presence of the implant. Once the gums are fully healed, the prosthetic tooth can be attached to the abutment. The total time may be from three to six months.

How Close Will a Dental Implant be to a Natural Tooth?

Out of all the choices for tooth replacement, an implant may just be the closest to the natural tooth. Dental implants function very much like natural teeth. You can brush, floss, chew, talk and otherwise use your teeth in the very same way that you can when you have natural teeth. Since the dental implants have an extremely realistic appearance, they are the next best thing to having your own natural teeth, both functionally and visually.
